Decreased Sperm Count and Cell Phone Use

February 06, 2008 By: Editor Category: Science No Comments →

(REUTERS) 6 February 2008:

Men who talked more than four hours a day on a cell phone had the lowest sperm counts in a recent study. The study looked at 361 men and found that, on average, the more hours a day men talked on their cell phones, the lower the sperm count. Not only that, but they had a greater percentage of abnormal sperm.  The study’s authors are quick to note that the finding do not prove that cell phones somehow damage sperm.  They state that even though their study found a strong association between cell phone use and decreased semen quality, “…they do not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.”

(MSNBC.COM) 19 November 2007:

A new study shows that more women under the age of 45 are dying of heart disease due to clogged arteries while the death rate for men that age has leveled off. The study, done by researchers at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention with the University of Liverpool looked at US vital statistics for artery related death in adults age 35 and older for the years 1980 through 2002. The study revealed the death rate for women ages 35 to 44 rose from 1997 to 2002.

Nicaraguan Woman Dead Due to Abortion Ban

November 06, 2007 By: Editor Category: Health, Parenting, Science No Comments →

(MSNBC.COM) 6 November 2007:

A mere two weeks after Agustin Perez of Managua, Nicaragua married Olga Reyes, he buried her. Reyes died from an untreated ectopic pregnancy. Because of the anti-abortion law in Nicaragua, doctors were afraid to treat her. In 2006, Nicaragua, along with 34 other countries, banned abortion, even to save the life of the mother.

Dr. Carla Cerrato says that she is seeing hysterectomies and severe infections that leave women sterile or dead because doctors can’t take ANY action that MIGHT harm a living fetus. “We have to wait until the fetus dies. But often, for the woman, it’s too late,” she said.

Breast-Fed Children Continue to Benefit

November 05, 2007 By: Editor Category: Health, Parenting, Science No Comments →

(MSNBC.COM) 5 November 2007:

Yet another reason to breast feed? As adults they are more likely to have higher levels of HDL cholesterol, the “good” cholesterol.  A study looked at 962 people, average age 41, taking part in the long-term Framingham Heart Study. Those who were breast-fed were 55% more likely to have the higher levels of HDL cholesterol. The breast-fed folks on average also had a lower body mass index, or BMI, which measures how overweight a person is.

Sexual Preference and the Worm Brain

October 25, 2007 By: Editor Category: Gender Roles, Science, Sex No Comments →

(MSNBC.COM) 25 October 2007:

Sexual orientation seems to be wired into the brains of nematode worms, and tweaking this sexual wiring can result in worms attracted to members of the same sex.

“The conclusion is that sexual attraction is wired into brain circuits common to both sexes of worms,” said researcher Erik Jorgensen, scientific director of the Brain Institute at the University of Utah and an investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

“We cannot say what this means for human sexual orientation, but it raises the possibility that sexual preference is wired in the brain,” Jorgensen said. “Humans are subject to evolutionary forces just like worms. It seems possible that if sexual orientation is genetically wired in worms, it would be in people too.”

Egg Freezing Not Sound Technology

October 22, 2007 By: Editor Category: Science, Sex No Comments →

(MSNBC.COM) 22 October 2007:

Women who have put off having children with the idea that egg freezing technology is just around the corner may have to come up with plan B. New fertility guidelines say that the procedure remains highly experimental, even though it is being offered in some areas. While the technology for freezing sperm is sound, the egg freezing technology doesn’t work nearly as well. The reason may be because eggs contain lots of water and this makes it harder to freeze them successfully. Ice crystals form during the freezing or thawing process, which destroys the eggs in much the same way ice crystals on frozen foods destroys the flavor and texture.

States Fail on Women’s Health

October 17, 2007 By: Editor Category: Health, Science No Comments →

(REUTERS.COM) 17 October 2007:

Most U.S. states have made little progress toward improving women’s health and many have fallen behind as rates of obesity and diabetes continue to climb, a new 50-state report released on Wednesday showed.

The best state for women’s health is Vermont and the worst is Mississippi, the report concluded.

“The nation as a whole and individual states are falling farther behind in the quest to meet the national goals for women’s health,” said Judy Waxman of the National Women’s Law Center, which released the report along with the Oregon Health & Science University.

Teenage Boys Left Out of Mix

September 22, 2007 By: Editor Category: Health, Science, Sex No Comments →

(HINDUSTAN TIMES) 22 September 2007:

A survey has shown that rates of sexually transmitted diseases like chlamydia are more common in teenage girls than in women in their twenties. Also, that the same diseases are more common in men in their twenties than teenage boys.

Not surprisingly, the same survey also finds that the annual number of sexual partners is higher in teenage girls and twentysomething males than the other two groups.

The survey however, failed to make the obvious point: men do indeed tend to chase women younger than themselves, women in their 20s are more mature than their male counterparts and nobody, but nobody, is, despite the interest they themselves show in the subject, interested in having sex with teenage boys.

Men and Women Are Different!

September 18, 2007 By: Editor Category: Science, Sex No Comments →

(SCIENCE DAILY) 18 September 2007

That there are differences between men and women is no surprise…the continued existence of the species makes that clear. However, researchers have been surprised at one of the differences: the way in which male and female brains react to serotonin and its absence.

When levels fall, men become more impulsive and women more cautious. That the sexes react differently is a surprise: but perhaps evolutionary psychology can help here. We expect men to be more impulsive and women more cautious anyway, so could it be that lowering the levels reveals more of the innate character? In serotonin veritas perhaps?

Ovulating Strippers Make More Money

(THE TIMES OF INDIA) 13 October 2007:

In a revealing piece of economic research, Randy Thornhill has been able to show that women are more attractive to men when they are at the fertile part of their monthly cycle. By studying lap dancers who were and were not using the contraceptive pill, he was able to show that those cycling naturally had higher earnings in their fertile days than those either outside this part of the cycle or on the pill.
