Sex and Skin Cancer

June 26, 2008 By: Editor Category: Health 1 Comment →

(US News) 26 June 2008:

No, skin cancer isn’t one of those things you can get from sex: well, not unless you’re doing it outside a lot without sunscreren. However, there are major differences in the way that men and women suffer from the disease.

Men both get more cases of the various types of skin cancer and also are more likely to die of it if they get it. There is some evidence that male skin is simply more likely to become cancerous, but the major reasons seem to be twofold. The first is that men work outside more and thus gain more exposure, the second that they use much less sunscreen than women.

Another way of putting that last is that women simply pay more attention to the state of their skin overall: although might that change with the rise of metrosexuality?

Men and Sex

June 10, 2008 By: Editor Category: Relationships No Comments →

(SYDNEY MORNING MAIL) 10 June 2008:

File this under: Duh.

In what must be one of the least surprising relationship columns ever, the writer reveals that men are indeed willing to have sex with a woman simply because they’d like to have sex, not necessarily because they love that particular woman.

She goes on to point out that for a woman, having sex can  be one of the things which triggers feelings of love for a man.

The second part is both true and interesting, but is it really necessary in this day and age to point out the first?

Men and Women Flirt Equally

June 04, 2008 By: Editor Category: Relationships No Comments →

Vancouver Sun 4 July 2008:

But women seem to be rather better at it. That’s the message from new research from Florida Atlantic University. Men and women will both attempt to use their looks and subtle flirtation to get what they want from people of the other sex. However, women seem to be more successful at doing so than men.

It’s not for want of trying, the behavior happens at the same rate in each sex. However, the women’s greater success seems to be down to evolutionary factors. In that delicate dance of picking a mate it’s the women who usually do the deciding: the decision is, in genetic terms, vastly more important for them.

It doesn’t seem unreasonable then that flirting (mimicking availability rather than actually being available) works as a negotiating technique for women better than it does for men.

Metabolizing Fructose

June 02, 2008 By: Editor Category: Health, Science No Comments →

(REUTERS) 2 June 2008:

We know that there are differences between men and women, but it’s only recently that we’ve been finding out quite what they are in detail, as opposed to the old stereotypes.

One difference is that men and women seem to metabolize fructose, a simple sugar, differently. When tested on a high fructose diet men became at risk of both cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes and women did not.

The surprise comes from the fact that the natural source of fructose is fruit, something which we are all told we should eat much more of. And given the high levels which would have been found in pre-historic diets, it’s very odd that there is a sex difference in its effects.

Stealing DNA: Sexy Time

May 29, 2008 By: Editor Category: Science No Comments →

(REUTERS) 29 May 2008:

Forget about sex. Steal DNA instead. Scientists are amazed by tiny organisms that live in fresh water and continue to thrive in spite of not having sex.  How do they manage?  They steal genes from other organisms, according to a recent study.  Scientists found genes from bacteria, fungi, and plants incorporated into the DNA of the bdelloid rotifer. The bdelloid rotifer is a minute creature that stopped having sex 40 million years ago.  They also withstand desiccation and spring back into action after being dried out.

Pale and Virginal

May 19, 2008 By: Editor Category: Culture, Relationships No Comments →

(UPI) 19 May 2008:

Men of most nationalities prefer pale skinned women, according to researchers in the University of Toronto.  Apparently they associate pale color with “innocence, purity, modesty, virginity, vulnerability, and goodness.”

Women prefer their men to be associated with “sex, mystery and danger.”  They go for darker skinned men, according to researcher Shyon Baumann.

This study was based on images in advertising.  It found that the images of darker skinned men were most likely to have women with less clothes in the advertising items, and paler skinned women would be more conservatively dressed.

Guess which women are more likely to be having fun?

And Babies Make 6 for Jolie, Pitt

May 14, 2008 By: Editor Category: Celebrity, Parenting No Comments →

(MSNBC.COM) 14 May 2008:

Angelina Jolie confirmed that she’s having twins…after her “Kung Fu Panda” costar Jack Black spilled the beans in an interview with the TODAY show’s Natalie Morales.

Black made the announcement and Jolie confirmed the news:

“You’re gonna have as many as (the) ‘Brady Bunch’ when you have these,” Black joked.

“It’s confirmed? Is it two?” Morales asked.

“Yeah, yeah, we’ve confirmed that already,” Jolie responded. “Well, Jack’s just confirmed it actually.”

“Is that true?” asked a surprised Black.

“Yeah, you did,” said Jolie.

“Sorry!” said Black.

Jolie is keeping the sex of the babies private, but said that she may “possibly” give birth to the twins in France.

Sex and Networking

May 01, 2008 By: Editor Category: Culture, Relationships No Comments →

(INDUSTRY STANDARD) 1 May 2008:

No, sorry, not about the sexual possibilities of Facebook, rather, about how the genders seem to differ in their uses of the various social networking sites.  It seems that on average men have more “friends” on such sites than women do. This may be a surprise to those who normally think that womens’ social networks are wider than mens’.  However, when we look at the median numbers, rather than mean, then we see what we would expect: women do indeed have more social contacts. The mean is rather distorted by the fact that are a few men with very high numbers (over 10,000) friends on such networks: and as no one at all has that many friends, they’re using the sites for business, not simple social contact.

Men and Their Memories

April 17, 2008 By: Editor Category: Health No Comments →

(DAILY TELEGRAPH) 17 April 2008:

New research shows that the stereotype of the confused little old lady isn’t all that accurate: it should be the confused little old man. The study found that more men than women in old age had cognitive impairment (memory loss and so on) and that it started at an earlier age as well.

Further proof that men are in fact the weaker sex perhaps. Although it has to be admitted that no wife would be surprised at the result: husbands can never remember anything, can they?
